But Cortana isn’t available on Surface Headphones in all countries and regions, and the experience may vary by country/region. So if Cortana isn’t available on your headphones in your area, you won’t be able to control them using your voice, but you can still use the touch gestures.

You know, to use Cortana with your Surface Headphones, the headphones need to be connected to your Cortana-enabled Windows 10 PC, iOS device, or Android device, and you’ll need to set them up with Cortana on that device. Well, if you connect your headphones to a device that doesn’t have Cortana turned on, or on which you haven’t set up the headphones to work with Cortana, Cortana won’t be available.

You can follow steps below to Setup Surface Headphones with Cortana on your Windows/Android/iOS. When you’re setting up your headphones, you’ll learn the basics about using them, and you’ll be able to connect the accounts you want to use for music, phone calls, calendars and email, and Skype calls.

1. Setup Surface Headphones with Cortana on Windows/PC/Laptop

  1. First, press and release the power button quickly to turn your headphones on. They’ll be discoverable the first time you turn them on and the light will flash white.
  2. Select Start  > Settings  > Devices  > Bluetooth & other devices  > Add Bluetooth or other devices > Bluetooth.
  3. Select Surface Headphones then select Done.
  4. Sign in to Cortana: select the search box on your PC, and then select Sign in . (To see if you’re already signed in, select Notebook  and see if your personal account shows up.)
  5. Sign in to Cortana with your personal Microsoft account, not a work or school account.
  6. Select Devices , then select Get the app. Download the Cortana Device Setup app from the Microsoft Store.
  7. Open Cortana, select Devices > choose Add a new device. Follow the instructions to finish setting up your Surface Headphones with Cortana.

Note: To change the language that Cortana speaks to you in, go to Cortana > Devices  > Manage my Surface Headphones. Then under Preferences, select a language from the list. It will take a few minutes to download and install an update for the selected language. Switch languages at any time in the Cortana Device Setup app.

  2. On your Android device, go to Bluetooth settings and pair your Surface Headphones.
  3. Get the free Cortana app from Google Play.
  4. Open the Cortana app, sign in with your personal Microsoft account, then select Devices > Devices > Add a new device.
  5. Under Surface Headphones, select Set up and follow the instructions.

Note: To change the language Cortana speaks to you in, open the Cortana app, select Devices > Devices > Surface Headphones > Personalization > Language, then choose a language and select Save. It will take a few minutes to download and install an update for the selected language. Switch languages at any time in the Cortana app.

3. Setup Surface Headphones with Cortana on iOS device

  1. Press and release the power button quickly to turn your headphones on. They’ll be discoverable the first time you turn them on and the light will flash white.
  2. On your iOS device, open Settings > tap Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on, then tap Surface Headphones under Devices.
  3. Get the free Cortana app from the App Store.
  4. Open the Cortana app, sign in with your personal Microsoft account, and then select Devices > Devices > Add a new device.
  5. Under Surface Headphones, select Set up and follow the instructions.
